Making an Atom Model

On Monday, September 23, students will be creating a model of an atom in class as a formal assessment (test.)  Students have already been assigned an atom. They will need to bring some materials for this activity.  Please Do Not spend money on this assignment.  Buttons, candies, beans or other small objects could be used to represent subatomic particles. Students will need 20 of each particle.  Each particle should be a different color.  Particles representing protons and neutrons should be about the same size.  Electrons should be smaller.  Students will also need to bring a marker.  I will provide glue and tag board.

Formal Assessment:  Atom Model

You will need to bring the following materials to class on Tuesday:

Particles to represent subatomic particles:
20 @ Protons
Neutrons
Electrons
(Remember the respective size of each particle!)
Markers:  You will need one or two markers.  One should be black or blue.
Compass (I have a few.  Not enough for the entire class.)

I will supply the poster board and the glue.

You will create an atom model during class.  You will be expected to determine the correct number of protons, neutrons, and electrons, and place them in their correct locations within the atom.  Electrons must be placed in the appropriate electron shell.
You will also include the element name, chemical symbol, atomic mass, atomic number, and a key.

 Happy Science!
