Lesson Plan for the Week of November 18, 2013

Monday:  Student groups will finish presentations over "The Five Most Important Elements."
Introduction to reading chemical formulas: Students will be introduced to coefficients and subscripts in order to determine the number of atoms of each element in a chemical formula.  Students will read an introduction to chemical formulas on MBC, then view a short tutorial.  Students will then complete the worksheet "Writing and Reading Chemical Formulas" on MBC.  

Tuesday:  We will review how to determine the number of valence electrons using an element's location on the periodic table. Students will read Chapter 4, Section 1, p. 121.  Students will complete the worksheet "Writing Electron Dot Diagrams" and create electron dot diagrams for four elements.

Wednesday:  Students will read Chapter 4, Section 3, pp. 134-136.     Students will use electron dot diagrams to show how ionic bonds from between positive and negative ions. (This will complete the worksheet they began yesterday.)

Thursday:   Students will complete the worksheet "Determining oxidation numbers".    Students will then read Chapter 4, Section 2, pp. 126-130. Students will go to MBC to match formulas to chemical names.  

Friday:  Lab:  Students will continue to lab "What's the Matter with Bubbles." (Students must have all work completed in order to participate in labs.)

Lesson Plan for the Week of November 11, 2013

Monday:  Students will be creating and submitting a graph using data provided.  These graphs will be created and submitted online using the program "Create a Graph." 

Tuesday:  Test:  Chapter 3 (Get ready for the test by taking the practice test found on this website.)
Students will then complete the vocabulary assignment for Chapter 4 (MBC).

Wednesday:  Due:  Chapter 4 Vocabulary.  Students will use class time today to complete their visuals for the presentation tomorrow.  The requirements for the assignment are found at the end of "The Periodic Table" bundle on MBC.

Thursday:  Student presentations:  The Five Most Important Elements.

Friday:  Lab:  Students will complete "A Rocky Problem" and begin "What's the Matter with Bubbles."

Lesson Plan for the Week of November 4, 2013

Monday:
Video/Report: Fireworks
Students will then use colored pencils to complete a packet over the periodic table.  The table they color will show each family of the periodic table, the groups and periods, the number of valence electrons, and important elements.

Tuesday:  
Students will complete the element newsletter they began last Wednesday.  This assignment is due at the end of class today.

Wednesday:  
Video/Report:  Metalloids and Other Metals.
Students will begin working in groups to complete the webquest "The Top Five Most Useful Elements" under "Chapter Resources" in their online textbook.

Thursday:  
Chapter 3 Review
Students will complete the group webquest, "The Top Five Most Useful Elements".

Friday:  
Lab:  A Rocky Problem.
(All work must be completed before students may participate in labs.)

Lesson Plan for the Week of October 28, 2013

Monday:  Students will watch a video over 'Transition Metals' and complete a video report (MBC).
Today students will locate and save a picture of their element, an electron diagram, and a picture of their element in use.

Tuesday:  Students will watch a video over metalloids and complete a video report.  Students will complete the research for the element newsletter. Students will then begin work on an element newsletter.  

Wednesday:  Students will complete and submit an element newsletter using either iWorks or Word.

Thursday:  Demonstration:  Monster Toothpaste (identifying the signs of a chemical reaction)


Friday:  Lab:  Marble Lab.
Students will work in groups to complete "Mendeleev's Castle."

Lesson Plan for the Week of October 21, 2013

Monday:  Students will take notes over the second part of the power point presentation found in "The Periodic Table" bundle on MBC.
Students will complete the MBC assignment "Comparing Periodic Tables."

Tuesday:  Students will choose an element for research.

Students will be introduced to the family of Alkali Metals.  Students will watch a short video and complete a video report.  

Wednesday:  Students will research their chosen element using provided sites on the internet.  Students will take notes (worksheet & pencil).  Students will turn in their notes at the end of class today for a participation grade.

Lesson Plan for the week of October 14, 2013

Monday:  Due:  Chapter 3 Vocabulary.

Students will be introduced to Mendeleev's periodic table by Hank Green in a short video segment.
Students will complete an element scavenger hunt using the periodic table found in their textbook.

Tuesday:  Students will take notes over "The Periodic Table and Families" power point presentation (MBC).
Students will complete the boiling/melting point graphs they began last week.


Wednesday: Students will use the internet to find three different periodic tables.  Students will submit a copy of each table and explain what information is available on the table and how that information could be useful.

Thursday:   Due:  Boiling/melting point graphs.
Video/Report:  Part II of "Hunting for the Elements."

Friday:  8th Grade Field Trip

Lesson Plan for the Week of October 7, 2013

Monday: Students will watch the the first part of the video "Hunting the Elements" and complete a video report

Tuesday:  Test:  Chemical Symbols (This is the 7th and last test over chemical symbols.  Students who have not demonstrated mastery will receive a zero for this assignment.)  
Students will complete the Chapter 2 Review (MBC) during class today.

Wednesday:  Students will complete a packet over graphing.  Students will then create a graph of either boiling or melting points for 8 elements. (This assignment was postponed from last week due to 2-hour delays.)

Thursday:  Test over Chapter 2. Prepare for the test by taking the practice test located on this website.
Students will then complete the Chapter 3 Vocabulary (MBC).

Friday:  Students who have completed all work for this week will finish outstanding labs.  Labs for this nine week period include:

Plant Pigment (EC)
Bubble Lab
Marshmallow Lab
